We had stayed up all night on Friday evening and finally set
off for Heathrow at 12.30am. We arrived
at the security park as planned and were soon transferred to Terminal 5.
We realised we’d arrived almost an hour earlier than we could
have but eventually the check-in desks opened and we started to make progress.
Getting through security was very smooth and good-humoured
on everyone’s part and we found our usual airport breakfast haunt of
Wetherspoon’s to have some food and drink before take-off.
We took off around 30 minutes late but caught time up to
arrive on time in Rome. Getting off the
plane was slow - no air bridge at the Italian end! The steps took a while to arrive as did the
bus and then we were making progress again. Our luggage took a while to come through on
the carousel. I soon noticed that both handles on my case, while still usable,
had been broken in transit. We then
spent the best part of an hour queuing to register our complaint, only to be
told that it was likely that BA don’t take responsibility for damage to
handles, wheels etc.
In disgust and determined to followed this up in the UK, we
then set off to find the coach for the transfer. We gave our luggage to the transfer staff and
set off in the coach for Civitavecchia, about 50 minutes away.
Check in was probably the quickest we’ve ever experienced
and we were soon in our cabin. Then a
quick lunch in the self service and time for a nap. Cases finally arrived just before 7pm – lucky
our dinner is at 8.30pm. Dinner was
excellent; we have a lovely table by the window. Then we had a quick trip round the dance
floor but Elizabeth kept moaning (she’s written this!) that she had the wrong
shoes on so we retired for a much needed sleep.
